Prawn trap
A prawn trap is a specialized fishing trap used for catching prawns and shrimp. Designed with a durable, mesh structure, it is ideal for both commercial and recreational fishing, providing an effective way to capture prawns in saltwater and brackish environments.
Most prawn traps are cylindrical, hexagonal, or rectangular, designed to be placed on the ocean floor or near prawn habitats like estuaries, sandy bottoms, or shallow bays. Inside the trap, a bait compartment is placed to attract prawns, and the shape of the funnel or entrance ensures that once prawns enter, they are unable to find their way out.
Prawn traps come in various sizes and configurations, making them suitable for different fishing needs, whether for commercial prawn harvesting or recreational prawn fishing.
Applications
- Prawn Fishing: Primarily used to capture prawns or shrimp for food or bait purposes.
- Commercial Fishing: Common in commercial prawn harvesting operations to ensure efficient catch rates.
- Recreational Fishing: Suitable for anglers who enjoy prawn fishing as a hobby.
- Baiting and Trapping: Designed with bait compartments to attract prawns and increase the chances of capture.
- Environmental Considerations: Some prawn traps are designed with escape vents to allow non-target species or undersized prawns to escape, ensuring sustainable practices.
